This is THE best detox bath. It’s an incredible tool in your health tool box when you have a chronic illness like Lyme Disease, and it’s also incredible for the whole family (including kids) when anyone is starting to get sick (colds, flu, etc.). It stops infections quickly and relieves PAIN–all while detoxifying the body. ALL good things.
RECIPE:
4-6 Cups Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate)
32 oz. of Hydrogen Peroxide (3% is found at drugstores, grocery stores–very common)
2-4 Tbs. of grated Ginger (fresh from the produce section) wrap it in cheesecloth, a teaball, or even a nylon panty hose will do!
Instructions:
(This therapy is best utilized when Dry Brushing is done FIRST, but it’s not required. See post on “Dry Brushing” for the how-to’s.)
Do this for 7 consecutive days as the benefits are cumulative and increase in effectiveness, then 2-4 times a week for maintenance thereafter. You don’t have to do the 7 days for kids, but just as needed when you see signs of infection/illness. I give my girls detox baths 2 times a week and as needed for colds.
The science behind it…
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE – is helpful in oxidizing (breaking down) toxins as well as killing anaerobic microbes…like a one, two punch to infections!
EPSOM SALT – studies show that when we soak in magnesium sulfate both increase separately (magnesium and sulfate respectively) in both blood and urine. Both are good things! What it really is. Magnesium and Sulfate. First, the Magnesium is amazing. It holds the no. 2 position as the body’s most abundant element in cells and no. 4 when it comes to important positively charged ions. It helps regulate 325 enzymes and performs a vital role in helping the body maintain functions like muscle control to energy production and much more.
+Improves heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular beats (Lyme symptom I suffered from), reduces hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots, and lowering blood pressure.
+Improves body’s ability to utilize insulin.
+Removes toxins and heavy metals from cells which eases muscle pain.
+Improves nerve function by regulating electrolytes.
+It helps calcium maintain proper levels, the body’s main electrical conductor in the body.
+Magnesium is needed for the body to bind the right amount of serotonin (the feel good chemical in the brain).
Sulfate – don’t confuse with “sulfa” drugs–these are not the same. Sulfate is not easily absorbed when taken orally, but it IS absorbed well when we soak in it! It is needed when we form proteins for joints (this is lacking when people suffer from arthritis — they typically have low levels of Sulfate in the plasma and synovial fluids), I had joint pain when I was suffering from Lyme. Sulfate is low with people who have Irritable Bowel Sydrome (very common in people with Lyme Disease). Sulfate is necessary in the formation and repair of brain tissue which we all need–the brain fog is real! It’s needed for proper digestion and utilization of digestive enzymes. It is also necessary for the production of mucin, a protein that lines the intestines. This is also important for Lyme Disease suffers as many have Leaky Gut (I did). Mucin stops food and drugs from adhering to the intestines and blocks the migration of toxins into the bloodstream. It almost makes you want to eat it but alas, it doesn’t work that way! The soak is best!
GINGER – this wonderful, golden root looking thing aids in opening the pores of the skin which allows the magnesium sulfate to be more readily absorbed. Ginger increases blood circulation to the surface of the skin helping the oxygen from the Hydrogen Peroxide to do it’s magic as mentioned above…killing bacteria, fungi, and detoxifying poisons! Whoo hoo! Go Ginger!
Happy Detoxifying!
